Coventry tops London in ‘The Best Place to Live’ league tables

Hub - Coventry

Often sidelined as Birmingham’s little sister, Coventry has won a well-deserved spot in a poll of the best places to live in the UK! In a national survey questioning participants on the towns and cities that offer the best quality of life, Coventry beat off stiff competition from Birmingham – trailing seven places behind, and even London! Ranked an impressive 28th out of 138 places across the UK, the findings came as no surprise to Coventry’s residents, who have seen their city climb from 64th place the previous year.

The findings have come at a time when we’re encouraging social workers of all levels to consider moving to the city in order to join our team. And with generous £8,000 relocation packages on offer, it’s a tempting prospect…

Hub - Coventry 2The drive to recruit more social work professionals is the culmination of months of hard work, in which we have made some dramatic changes to the way in which our children’s services are structured. Resulting from extensive consultations with current employees and ex-employees who have already left their jobs, we asked what could be done better, what measures were needed to protect more children, and what their frustrations were with their roles. The answers presented a very clear picture, which in turn has led to the new service.

In short, social workers were struggling with their caseloads, they felt they weren’t being listened to, they had concerns that admin was taking up too much of their time and they were worried that the service was too disjointed, meaning children weren’t getting help quickly enough.

It was agreed that drastic measures were needed, so we’re currently recruiting for Social Workers, Team Managers and Service Managers who will share the workload more evenly. A new management structure has been put in place to ensure that every concern is heard, and strong relationships have been forged across various organisations and agencies so that children and families will have immediate access to all the help they need. A centralised admin hub has been created so that our dedicated staff won’t waste their time filling out forms when they could be with the families who need them, and perhaps most critically, a risk-management safeguarding group has been set up to detect and act on early signs of child safety issues. With these alterations, we’re confident that our social workers will be given the voice they need to make a dramatic difference.

It’s a bold new way of thinking, but it’s one that’s set to transform the face of social work. As such, we’re going to need the best staff to help us along the way – and our rates of pay reflect that. Join our Referral and Assessment Service or our Neighbourhood Teams as an experienced social worker with at least two years’ experience, within a year you could be earning up to £40,000 (which includes a market related supplement of £5,000.) We’re also offering a fair retention scheme meaning that our Referral and Assessment Service and Neighbourhood Teams can continue to expect the £5,000 market related supplement in their second year of service.

But we know it isn’t just about money – it’s about finding a good life/ work balance, and that’s something that Coventry definitely has to offer. With a good nightlife, fine dining, good schools, lovely green spaces, solid employment prospects in other sectors and a recent £multi-million regeneration scheme that has transformed the city centre, we’re proud to call this home.

So can Coventry really top big cities such as London and Birmingham as one of the best places to further both your personal and professional development? We certainly think so… and Coventry’s lucky inhabitants agree with us! And what about our commitment to help our social work team do even better in their careers? We’re with you every step of the way…
