Why Wokingham Borough Council?

Wokingham Borough Council Crest

Safeguarding children and supporting vulnerable families is our top priority and we need the best people helping us to make this happen.

In Wokingham we are developing our Social Work Academy which will provide guidance and support for social work students, newly qualified Social workers as they commence their ASYE and for Social workers who are developing their career.

As you embark on a challenging and hugely rewarding career helping to support children and families, we are committed to ensuring that you will be equipped and highly trained to become the best possible social worker with a phased approach to the volume and complexity of your workload.

You will have the support of a strong leadership and management team who will work with you to identify training, development and career progression opportunities.

For staff who wish to develop their career we will provide a development programme aimed at aspiring managers and those who wish to take on leadership and mentoring roles.  We are committed to support staff to develop as Practice Educators, enabling them to benefit from our university partnerships and to attend masterclasses. We are working towards ensuring our training programme is clearly mapped against the Professional Capabilities Framework and Knowledge and Skills Statement.  The Training Schedule, which is to be used in conjunction with this Programme, provides a list of all the courses currently being offered, incorporating LSCB training, Corporate Learning Schedules and e-Learning.   We offer a flexible approach to individuals, with the understanding that people learn in different ways, for example, in the classroom, in Participatory Action Learning Sets (in conjunction with Prof Munro, Dr Turnell) or in a Masterclass offered by our University Partners.

We understand that a structured Induction programme is essential for all new staff. Practice consultants will deliver the practice elements of the programme introducing staff to our practice framework to include support to embed the signs of safety model.

What we offer:

  • Reasonable caseloads – to help you settle into your role and recognised study time
  • The support of Practice Consultants for all staff
  •  Practice Educators acting as strong mentors overseeing student and ASYE development
  • Hands-on learning with opportunities to shadow and co-work
  • Extensive training opportunities including action learning sets and attending masterclass events with our university partners
  • Opportunities to learn from Eileen Munro and Andrew Turnell to embed our Practice framework.

What we are looking for

We want to develop our Academy into work we are proud of, so to make this happen, we need enthusiastic Social Workers who inspire and are motivated to deliver change. This is why we’re looking for talented, ambitious and passionate Social Workers to come and join us, who really want to improve the lives of children and young people.
