Make your mark by leading one of the very best Social Services authorities in Wales

About Us

This is seen to be the best time for a change in in social services leadership in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The Council recently received an “overwhelmingly positive” corporate assessment from the Wales Audit Office.  The Vale of Glamorgan Council is a place where talented individuals can make a real difference.  We are resourceful, resilient, committed to improvement and keen to embrace new ideas.  When comparing local government performance, Data Unit Wales has recognised the exceptionally high standards achieved by the Vale of Glamorgan.  Welsh Government has confirmed that plans for local government reform will place the Council at the forefront of public services reform.  The challenge for us now is continuing to lead from the front.

Building on widely acknowledged strengths, you’ll be supported by an able and committed management team in social services, staff who have a proven capacity for delivering excellent services and for helping people achieve good outcomes.  We have a very good track record in workforce sufficiency, stability and development.

Our preparations for putting into effect the new Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014 were the best they could be.  In line with our strategic direction, we continue to respond to increasing demand for services and financial pressures by taking steps to modernise services and to make them more effective.  We are building on solid foundations and we have clear plans for further innovation.

About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Managing Director and to the Council, you will be accountable for an integrated department which delivers all the local authority’s social services functions, regardless of age.  You will have a key role in advising councillors and the corporate management team on strategies for improving methods of working, service provision, practice and use of resources.  You will manage large, complex budgets, and ensure that services are financially sustainable.  The director will also lead the way in ensuring effective safeguarding practice for children and adults and act as the professional lead for staff.

You will be at the centre of a collaborative network involving the whole range of statutory agencies and service providers, at a local and regional level.  Sustained collaborative working with key partners over many years is assisting us to deliver our vision.  There is a strong commitment to well-being services and prevention, engaging with citizens and communities.

About You

We are looking to appoint an ambitious, inspiring leader to build on the strong foundations in pace.  A proven track record of effective management within social services is essential.  Crucially, you will know what good practice looks like and how to help your staff achieve these standards in a demanding environment.  A champion of innovation, your work ethic and attitude will create an atmosphere of trust and respect so that others feel able to experiment with new and innovative ways of working.  Excellent judgement and first class leadership skills will enable you to make a positive and lasting contribution to social services in the Vale of Glamorgan and to maintain our excellent reputation.
